What is BDO all about...

During the 2019-2021 Covid Pandemic I read Alastair Humphrey’s book MicroAdventures and realized I have been participating and sharing in microadventures for years. I am thankful to him for putting a name to this idea, and I think it is an amazing mindset to share with people to open them up to potential adventurous opportunities, no matter how small.

Humphrey points out in his book that many of the amazing adventures he has had like rowing across the Atlantic Ocean, walking across India, or biking around the world (like literally, he biked around the world), require months of preparation and planning, support staff, and time, lots of time.  His theory is that if you remove the months of planning and preparation and the amount of time, you end up looking for adventures more locally to you and your city.  These are what he calls Microadventures.  Humphrey considers Microadventures, defined in his book, as overnight outdoor adventures that are "small and achievable, for normal people with real lives."  I take this idea one more step in that a microadventure does not have to involve overnight, it could just be something fun in nature for an afternoon.  Sometimes even a few miles bike ride through the woods, or a quick morning of paddleboarding, or a long hike that takes you somewhere new; these are all microadventures that I believe the people that have jobs and lives can do.  It just takes an idea or a little nudge to get out there and experience all nature has to share with us.

Authors note: In an attempt to avoid taking Humphrey’s words, I have tried to expand on his concept but will be using a few different words to express the same idea.  Throughout this post, I will be using bite-sized adventure, mini-trip, or tiny-travels to explain the idea of the above definition.

What is this blog going to be about you ask?  Bald Dave’s adventures, of course, this is what this blog is going to be about.  It will be about my and your outdoor adventure time in nature.  It will be about ways that I take my own bite-sized adventures and how you can find your own around you that suit you and your surroundings.  It will be about taking adventures on a budget, it will be about tips and tricks to make your tiny trips work for you.  It will be about gear and things that you could use on these trips.  It will be about your health and wellness, it will be about nature, and how nature and your wellness are directly related.  It will be our environment and what we can do to save it for our next 7 generations so they can have adventures, both big and small.  It will be about family and kid’s coming on these adventures and making memories.  And lastly and least important, it will be about me, my experiences, and opinions on the subject of nature, adventures, and the outdoors.

I truly hope you stick around for this blog, come back often, and share it with your friends.  You could bookmark it, you could follow it on Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram.
