Why Walking is the Perfect Intro to Outdoor Adventures

Aah, walking, the beginning of so many adventures, big and small.  Walking may just be the best thing for your journey into the outdoor world and into starting your own bite-sized adventures.

I imagine that some of you are reading this and thinking “I can’t get out on an adventure because __________ (fill in the blank with your excuse).”  And while I hear and acknowledge your concerns, I am assuming that most of us can get out for a walk, even if that walk is just down to the end of the block.  Walking is seen as one of the best forms of exercise for your physical and mental health.  The internet is full of scientific studies that share that walking in nature is great for more than weight management, but also managing blood pressure, heart disease, and strengthening bones. Not to mention, the increase in a positive mood and be overall healthier.  


One of the best parts about walking is that walking is free.  I don’t think I need to expand on this part much more.  


Another huge piece to walking being the perfect starter adventure is that it is family-friendly.  You can take a walk with your family in nature for any distance and still find happiness and something to smile about. 

This idea is the crux of the bite-sized adventure concept.  People often look at a weekend backpacking trip and think that it is out of reach when in reality it is totally within your grasp but you need to take that first step to get there.  That first step is most likely a walk around your neighborhood.  Taking that walk will lead to longer walks, which will lead to a small hike in the woods, and that momentum will build to feeling comfortable on longer hikes.  Walking is an easy way to set small goals, and build on your goals.  Walking is extremely versatile and can be modified to fit your comfort zone where you live.  You can find a flat place to walk or look for hills, or walk on the beach or in the mountains or around your block, or only walk in perfect weather rather than be miserable in the rain.  It is an excellent way to start your journey into the world of outdoor adventures, regardless of your level of skill.
